Cascade Helmet

Looking through some of the major sports equipment manufacturers catalogues typically leads to seeing the same types of things with minor variations here and there. Enter Cascade with their new SEVEN technology CHX Helmet.
Who is Cascade?
Cascade has been making sports helmets in the United States for two decades, and are the official helmet provder to Major League Lacrosse. However, they have recently ventured into the ice hockey market with a helmet called the Cascade CHX.
Concussion Protection
The Cascade CHX with SEVEN technology claims to be the Enemy of Concussions! That is a great marketing claim these days with all of the emphasis on the prevalence of headshots and the amount of injuries that have resulted from hits to the head this season. But…can they prove that the CHX is better than current helmets at protecting players from concussions?
The Cascade SEVEN technology uses “lateral displacement technology” to provide the protection of two helmets in one. They claim that their helmet protects equally as well against concussions as it does against catastrophic hits.
Custom Hockey Helmets
For all of you who like to customize your helmets, Cascade has over 3,300 color combinations to choose from and custom helmets are built and shipped within 24 hours.
The price point appears to be about $140.00 without a cage, but there are no dealers listed on their website and no pro players currently using the helmet.
Where to Buy It!
The Cascade CHX is available at Hockey Giant.com for only $119.99!

does it have a CSA approved sticker on it?
Tyler on Fri, 28th Sep 2007 8:48 am
I believe the helmet is CSA approved. Please check with your local hockey shop to ensure that they are selling CSA approved Cascade Helmets.

My son just received this helmet from his D3 College hockey team because of the consussion prevention claims. After wearing it twice was cross checked from behind and received a concussion that sent him to the hospital by ambulance. I was not impressed when I examined the Cascade Helmet for my younger son and opted for the Nike Bauer helmet with the occipital strap and memory foam inserts. In my opinion, the Cascade Helmets are not worth the $140.00 and I wish I had puchased his helmet myself.

I bought this helmet for playing after seeing my beloved CCM 1052 Tacks helmet start to lose parts while in a game. I bought the Cascade because it advertised that it was available in an XL size due to its adjustable fit. Now for those of you who have a large melon know that it is very hard to find not only a helmet that fits, but also one that is safe. The CCM 1052 Tacks Helmet was one of those.
I have used the Cascade for one game now and my first impression of it is that it is very light indeed and does provide great ventalation. However, it does not fit my head in terms of width and by the end of the game, I had a slight headache from my temples being pushed in.
Not sure where I stand right now on this helmet, but after paying $180 ($120 for the helmet, $60 of stupid UPS brokerage fees), I think I would have been best to stick to another CCM. I will write more at seasons end.

The helmet is uncomfortable and looks like a space helmet. My friends all said that if I had a tinted mask I could be an extra in halo 3. Worst helmet I’ve ever worn…period.

[...] I wonder how it will stack up against the news Easton Stealth S17 Helmet or the Cascade CHX? [...]

I have had 4 concussions and recently got another, decided to try this helmet. I ordered it in my teams colors and ordered next day shipping. It took 7 days to deliver and when i got it i found that it couldnt fit, even though the largest size is supposed to fit M/L/XL it doesnt and the smaller one is to small. My head found a loophole. Besides the fact it is the ugliest helmet on the market, i brought it to practice and it was the victim of all the jokes in the locker room, they said it looked like a retard helmet. We were able to return the helmet which was a surprise to me. I then got a RBK 8k and i am much happuer.

The majority of concussions originate from facial blows, helmets do nothing to prevent truama to the jaw jiont. This helmet is the only one on the market that uses football helmet technology, it’s about time, Although it seems they need to make some adjustments in fitting techniques. Some helmets have self adjusting features.
Ben on Wed, 27th Feb 2008 2:14 pm
I posted above and I have to say I do not like the Cascade due to the poor fit. I imagine it would fit a smaller head just fine, but it is utter BS that it fits L/XL head sizes. I Have tried re-adjusting the screws numerous times but the reality is that is does not fit a larger noggin.
As I have paid over $180 for just the helmet to say that I’m very disappointed would be putting it lightly.

My son has this helmet and says it is the most comfortable helmet he has ever worn. He also reports not feeling the impact as badly in his Cascade helmet vs his CCM. I think the helmet looks sharp. The other helmets are egg shaped, this is more modern and styled like a bike helmet. Besides…who cares what others think. Safety is number 1 and I believe this helmet offers a safer helmet than the rest.
Ben on Tue, 15th Apr 2008 3:47 pm
Well if your son likes his so much, I will sell him mine at half price if you wish.
Quite frankly, if a helmet doesn’t fit as advertised, then it isn’t worth a dime.
Cascade was such a disappointment to me.

I have both my kids (10 and 12) wearing one. I think with the custom colors it looks great in uniform. Both kids are very satisfied with the fit and the wieght. I was concerned with the the chin cup but when it is adjusted correctly adds comfort. The cage is what I was really interested in, The shape is more of a collegate style and is not so close to the nose as the others are, just a little more room. I like the chrome finish, and the real kicker is MADE IN THE USA! I will be getting one for myself, done with the shield tired of the scrathes and fogging.

i think this helmet is great !
LJ on Thu, 11th Sep 2008 3:48 pm
I wear an XL helmet and this helmet fits great. In fact, it is the only helmet that really fits my head well. I have had no one make comments about this helmet’s look. I have had a couple people ask about it and then buy one. They like it. I think they were probably discussing the helmet’s owner and not the helmet when they refer to the retard. Try skating with your head up and you won’t get 5 concussions.
This is a great helmet. But remember opinions are like butts. Everyone has one and most of them stink.

Do any nhl players wear the cascade helmet??
Chad on Sun, 9th Nov 2008 8:57 pm
As an employee in a local proshop, I had the opportunity to meet with a representative of cascade to discuss if our shop should carry the helmets. After trying out the helmets every employee unanimously decided against even carrying the helmets. The safety is no more than a bauer 9500 or easton S17 helmet can offer, and regardless of what mom’s think, kids don’t want a helmet that doesn’t look cool. The fitting, as stated above by some, is extremely exclusive to only those with a perfectly shaped head and will not sit comfortably or safely to most. I strongly discourage any from using this helmet.
Marc on Wed, 12th Nov 2008 2:26 am
LJ, what you say about keeping your head up is true but concussions can happen in a lot of ways. (e.g., check from behind three feet into boards, elbow to head, slap shot to neck). My queston for you is do you think this helmet provides more concussion protection than other helmets?

Hey Rob,
Still wearing the Cascade, but I will let you have it for $50 US plus shipping. I Live in Canada. I have worn it for 30 games now and haven’t been hit (I play in a non-contact league).
I would have liked to keep wearing this helmet, but it just doesn’t fit well.

I got my helmet in january of last season and it seemed fine until i got a minor concusion and whip lash at the end of the season. This season I recieved a broken nose when my helmet came loose and hit me in the nose so I tightened it and now I get a head ache from wearing it. not a very good helmet
Josh on Tue, 9th Dec 2008 9:32 am

i have the helmet and this is my second season i like and i got hit hard i went i got hit in the head i didnt have a concussion just my back was twisted its great but for all people who dont like it i respect the but i like it more than any other helmets
Kirsten on Sun, 4th Jan 2009 6:54 pm
For those of you claiming a “minor concussion” — doctors cannot diagnose such a thing. Basically, you have a major concussion OR the POSSIBILITY of a minor concussion. There is no XRAY, CT Scan or MRI that diagnoses a “minor concussion”.
Todd on Mon, 18th May 2009 8:37 pm
I bought the Cascade and it fits me fine. As a physician who’s seen enough head injuries, I looked at several other helmets and have no doubt the Cascade will prevent concussions better in some situations. The padding is thicker, which is why it’s so ugly.
Helmets prevent concussions by decreasing the acceleration or deceleration your head goes through, when something hits it (stick) or when your head hits something (ice, boards…). With the Cascade there’s simply more distance over which you spread the velocity change.
But no helmet is going to prevent a concussion from a hit Lindros took from Stevens a few years ago. A mouthguard might make a difference there, but the helmet won’t.
I love my Cascade helmet because I feel safer in it, but it’s hot to wear. Not an huge issue at my level of play, but might be for others!
Cascade provided additional incentive for the major hockey brands to compete on safety when they made their “concussion claims”, so like the helmet or not, they probably made the game a little safer for everyone. And that’s always a good thing.

Hey, does anybody know where i can get cascade CHX helmets? Like websites? Or stores in Edmonton Alberta, Canada?
Barbara on Wed, 17th Feb 2010 4:11 pm
I love this helmet, who cares what it looks like? You boys, hockey isn’t a fashion show! All I want is head protection and this helmet delivers. I was checked from behind and went down, hard, and it was just a bump.
This is the most comfortable helmet I’ve worn since my Carbster (rest in peace, beloved Carbster…) It’s a great fit and doesn’t feel like that CCM trash can on my head–those CCMS have stiffest. foam. evar. Youch.

Does anybody know if there has been any scienfiticly based study of hockey helmets? There is all this talk about concussions but neither industry or government has stepped forward to doing any testing to see if any helmet will prevent concussions. There is certainly legal issues if claims are made and the helmet does not work as advertised.
