Hakan Loob Hockey LegendAfter being selected at 181 overall in the 1980 NHL Entry draft, Hakan Loob blazed up and down the right wing for the Calgary Flames from 1983-1989. Skating with the likes of Lanny MacDonald and Joe Nieuwendyk, it was easy to overlook this highly-skilled scoring machine.

Loob, a native or Sweden, returned to his home country after winning the Stanley Cup with Calgary in 1989, to play for 7 more seasons in the Swedish Elite league. In Sweden, Loob is not overlooked and in fact has a trophy named after him in the Swedish Elite League. The Hakan Loob Trophy is awarded to the leading goal scorer in the Swedish Elite League each season.

    A couple years ago, hounding outside a hotel in Boston, a security guard walked up and told me to leave.

    My response, in my best Swedish accent, was: “Hakan Loob?”

    “You don’t speak English?” the guard asked.

    “Hakan Loob? Hakan Loob?”

    “What are you speaking?” the guard asked. “Finnish? Dutch? Swedish?”

    “Yah. Yah. Hakan Loob. Hakan Loob.”
