Instigating Change

Hockey Fights | Derek BoogaardAs I digest some of the information coming out of the General Managers meeting in Naples, Fla this morning, I can’t help but scoff at the instigator rule change they have proposed.

The proposal, which still has to be approved, poses to increase the number of instigator penalties from three to five before the player is subject to a two game suspension.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that this won’t make a hill of beans difference? They keep mentioning Sidney Crosby as one of the reasons, but the Penguins don’t have anyone who would instigate a fight anyway.

Are they making a change just for the sake of making a change, to please a few players, coaches or fans? You tell me…I just don’t get it.

What happened the drastic changes such as making the nets bigger, removing the red line, the infamous new obstruction rules all in the name of a more entertaining game for the fans?

If they really want to make the game more entertaining for the fans, they should throw out the instigator rule all together. If someone delivers a cheapshot, then they have to live by the code and pay the piper. Let Derek Boogaard and Eric Godard earn their living.

P.S. – If you want to make a change that bad, do us all a favor and nix the touch icing.
