Red Wings May Forfeit Cup To Canadian Coalition

Please note that the following story is a satire of the debacle in the Canadian Government and is intended for light-hearted humor only.

Canada was stunned Monday when it was announced that The Stanley Cup may be awarded to a coalition of NHL teams led by Brian Burke and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Sources close to the league say that the Stanley Cup could change hands as early as December 8th when the league officials are set to announce a ‘non-confidence vote’.

The cup could be stripped from the 2008 playoff champions, the Detroit Red Wings, and be awarded to the coalition of Canadian franchises led by the Leafs, who didn’t even make the playoffs.

How is this possible, hockey fans ask?

Well, the Leafs have formed a coalition with Eastern Conference semifinalists, the Montreal Canadians, and Conference quarter finalists the Ottawa Senators, whose total points now out number the Red Wings.

According to current Leaf coach Ron Wilson, “the Red Wings have lost the confidence of the league and should hand the cup over immediately to our coalition”. Wilson also continued to state that if the Red Wing organization did not make “monumental changes” to the way they have handled their championship reign, then there was no possibility of coming to an amicable agreement.

Red Wing coach, Mike Babcock, says “this back-handed attempt to end the embarrassingly long drought of Stanley Cups in Toronto is shameful.  This coalition is asking for the Stanley Cup without a playoff to determine the better team and only 3-months into the new season.”

League Action

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman could not be reached for comment, but sources say he is cutting short a European trip to try to resolve the unprecedented hockey crisis that could force a second playoff series, or see an opposing coalition of teams take the cup.

League officials have said that there is an option to delay the results until the Red Wings have a chance to deliver their final roster at the season’s trade deadline, but it is still unclear as to what decision commissioner Gary Bettman might make.

You have got to be kidding. The cup was earned by Detriot fair and square. They can portray it however they feel.
Just because the Canadian Coalition doesn’t have what it takes to actually earn the cup they have to try and get it somehow. To be honest, I would be embarrased to wear any of their colors in thier support after this show of discrace. If they succeed in their cowardly efforts, I pray that most of their fans have second thoughts about their team due to the fact that they are too chicken to actually fight for it. What has the NHL come too.
