I’m all for having a little fun at the expense of an official, but this is absolutely ridiculous!
This story was found via CBC and really struck me as it happened close to my home in Northern Saskatchewan.
It is unfortunate that things like this happen, resorting to violence against an official is just plain ignorant. It is especially sad because this incident happened at a local recreational hockey tournament involving “adults”…
Police are searching for a 21-year-old man who faces several charges after a referee was viciously attacked during a hockey game near Meadow Lake on Sunday.
The incident happened on the Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation around 11:30 a.m. during a tournament at the local arena.
A player who had been penalized and was being ejected from the game allegedly cross-checked the 45-year-old referee across the face with a hockey stick, RCMP said.
The referee was rushed to hospital in Meadow Lake with facial injuries and was later transferred to a Saskatoon hospital for further treatment.
RCMP issued an arrest warrant on Monday for the man, who is wanted on charges of aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and breach of recognizance.
UPDATE: CTV News reported today that the referee underwent extensive treatment for broken teeth and a broken nose in Saskatoon.
They also happened to find a brain tumor.
The referee issued a statement saying he would like to to talk to the accused man, who is still at large. He also mentioned that the accident was a blessing, otherwise the tumor would not have been found.
