The first contest in the heated rivalry of the Battle of Alberta took place last night as the Calgary Flames dropped a 3-1 decision to the Edmonton Oilers.
Set to impress after his off-season acquisition, Petr Sykora proved Craig MacTavish’s brilliance once again by potting two goals against the Oilers’ provincial rivals. Defenseman Daniel Tjarnqvist added Edmonton’s other goal, while Flame’s sniper Jarome Iginla replied for Calgary.
According to TSN, Alex Hemsky said that Sykora’s ability to beat guys one on one and skate with the puck is the difference, noting that Sykora is a “modern hockey player”.
The contest was marred with penalties, but the Flames could not bulge the twine on any of their nine powerplays. This is yet another example of the importance of great special teams in the re-vamped National Hockey League.
It was a great start to the 2006-2007 season for the Oilers, who were backed by over 16,800 fans at Rexall Place. The two teams meet up again Saturday night in Calgary as the Flames hope to even the Battle of Alberta at one win a piece.
